Kimono Me Baby!!!

Today's article is about...ME. As much as I love fashion and clothes I have no idea where to begin on wearing a kimono PROPERLY.But with the help of Miyuki and Miyuki's mother, Yumiko, I got the ultimate New Year's makeover...

Day 1

Fresh off my return trip back to Kyoto from California I packed my bags and headed to Tokyo to visit the ever-so-cute Miyuki and as a bonus I also got to see my other friends who work VERY far from me, as they were also visiting Tokyo, in addition to...CATHY LEE, my roommate from college! Allow me to quote the always fun, fiesty, and spunky Cathy, "We are in Tokyo! Seriously we are all in Japan, when does THAT happen..ever?!" I would normally say "NEVER!" But Japan has magic that I can not begin to describe!

Lisa and Maya (They both are fluent in Japanese! Mom, why am I not?!!!)
Miyuki and CATHY LEE!!! Roomies reunited in Tokyo!
Day 2

We unfortunately had to cut out early on everyone the night before (Gomen Cath!) because, well, we HAD to get our beauty sleep for KIMONO DAY! Our day started at 8am with a delicious udon breakfast with Miyuki's family. Mmmmmm udon (Pardon me while I salivate over my love for Japanese food). And then it was off the the salon with all the kimono pieces in tote. I knew that there were many layers to a complete kimono outfit, but I didn't know it was THAT many! While Miyuki was getting her hair done I was behind a dressing curtain getting tied into Miyuki's mothers beautiful cream, gold thread embroidered, silk kimono.

Miyuki getting tied in.

I have to say that I was so nervous about wearing it because I didn't want to trip or drag the sleeves (which take some getting use to due to the sleeve length) or spill anything on it. But in my opinion, back in the day when the kimono design and outfit was first created, the designer must have had the same thing in mind because once a girl is all tied in and has on her zori, flat Japanese sandal, there is no way she is walking anywhere fast!
Yea, and good luck trying to go to the bathroom!

Yup, I was doing the Japanese shuffle for a good part of the day. Though the shuffle made it much easier for me to pay more attention to the safety of the gown.
ALL these layers on one girl! It was such a process to put on AND take off!!!

It was such a wonderful day to spend with Miyuki, her mother, and her father. Her parents drove us to a beautiful garden to take our pictures and then we had a nice lunch together and our last stop was a shrine to pay our New Year's respects. I feel so fortunate to have such a great friend like Miyuki, she has made my whole time in Japan more memorable than I ever could have imagined.
